Education & experience

My Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling with Distinction is from the University of Edinburgh, where I trained in both the person-centred and psychodynamic approaches to therapy. I am particularly interested in childhood and early attachment experiences, and how the past impacts us today.

I hold a post-qualifying Certificate in Psychosexual Studies from Tavistock Relationships in London. This underpins my work supporting clients who are exploring questions or challenges around sex, sexual expression in all its forms, sexuality and identity. Please see the section on psychosexual therapy for more information about this aspect of my practice.

I have been seeing clients in my private counselling practice for over 5 years. I worked as a counsellor for a number of years in charitable and third sector counselling organisations in Edinburgh including PF Counselling and The Next Chapter. My therapeutic experience also includes working at the University of Edinburgh Student Counselling Service where I offered short-term counselling to students with a wide range of issues, and at the Edinburgh Crisis Centre supporting those in mental health crisis.

I am a Registered Member of BACP, and work within their code of ethics. I hold full professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

Interests & background

Mind and body are closely connected. I have been a practitioner of yoga for over 25 years, and more recently have begun to explore wild swimming and breathwork. I enjoy world travel, and spending time in Scotland’s natural landscapes. These practices and interests nourish me personally and are a resource to draw on in my counselling work. I enjoy supporting clients to find holistic ways of looking after themselves physically as well as mentally.

Before training as a counsellor, I qualified as a lawyer. After a brief period in private legal practice, I worked for a decade in a charitable organisation supporting clients with workplace and employment issues, with a particular focus on equalities and anti-discrimination work. I have also set up and run my own successful business. These varied experiences inform my broad collaborative and strengths-based approach to therapy.

Continuing professional development is important to me and I regularly attend workshops on a wide range of counselling topics. As well as my post-qualifying Certificate in Psychosexual Studies, I have undertaken further training in working with childhood trauma, attachment issues in relationships, working with sexual trauma, sleep difficulties, creative techniques in therapy, and use of breathwork in therapeutic practice.
